Irish Moiled

The Irish Moiled breed traces back to the era of the Vikings. Being one of the oldest beef breeds in existence today and the first known polled breed of cattle.

In 2019 on behalf of Dennis and Theresa Roberts of Queensland, Australia. I visited Ireland to research this breed and explore the possibilities of their merit for the restaurant industry.

I found the cattle were very adaptable to harsh environments. Able to produce to the highest levels on native pastures, and marble to the highest degree off a grassland roughage diet.

Dennis and Theresa Roberts of AAA Global Genetics, Australia, along with Takapoto Farms and Rongamai Farms based in New Zealand, have an investment going forward to set in place a Meat Business supplying genetics to commercial farmers.

A rewarding buy-back system on progeny to be marketed to the Irish pubs and restaurants of both New Zealand and Australia.

Both Lindsay Jones and Dennis Roberts are undertaking a trip to Ireland (24th July – 15th August 2022) selecting donors to import embryos to Australia and New Zealand.

Irish Moiled Breeder Co-operative

A co-operative structure is currently under development to encompass Australia and New Zealand. All graded up progeny recorded with 7/8ths or 87% will be deamed domestic purebred, and embryos imported from Ireland native purebred. All progeny have to meet certain performance objectives to be registered as purebreds.

Semen will be available to co-operative members in May 2023 from 3 selected Irish sires that meet our criteria.

2025 purebred bulls will be available to the commercial farmers with a rewarding buyback on calves of beef origin. Breeding cows must be 75% or more British origin, i.e. Angus, Hereford or Shorthorn.
